moving while application is pending

Hello all!

I will be eligible to apply for my naturalization in a couple of months. However, there is possibility that I may have to move to a different state in the next 6-9 months.

How much of a delay will it cause if I transfer my application to a different state midway through the process?

Also, should I submit my application from where I am now, or apply in the new state 3 months after (IF) I move there. The problem is that if I apply after moving, then I am looking at potentially a 6-9 month delay.

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks :)

I would like to know the answer to this question too. Actually I have already moved after applying for naturalization and INS says that my file will be transferred to my new office once I am scheduled for an interview (It seems that I am in the queue for an interview at my old service center). According to INS they will schedule the interview at the new center and then transfer my file. This will definitely cause some delay..but I am hoping it wont be a 6-8 months delay. Any inputs on this would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi abhp123,

When did you submit your application, and how long after that did you move? I honestly don't know how long the delay will be, but one immigration attorney with whom I spoke said that it will be at least 3 months.

JoeF,

Even if I did move, the old address will still be valid. If that is the case, would you still recommend against me filing from where I am now? I wouldn't mind waiting and applying from the new state if I knew for a fact that I was going to move. I just don't want to wait for nothing if the move (a possible job offer) does not materialize.

Thanks.

Hi gabby2001

I applied in june 2002 and moved in september. I had my fingerprinting done before i moved...so the delay i would experience would be the time involved in transferring the file from my previous state to the new state. INS says that I am in que for the interview and they will transfer the file to my current local office once I am scheduled.
In your case, if you move right after applyinf and before fingerprinting, then that would add additional delays.

I would appreciate it if somebod with similar situation share their experience.

Thanks a lot.
