Hi All

I am working in US presently. I am a landed Canadian PR and will be moving permanently to Canada sometimes next month. I have a few questions.

Besides U-Haul does any body know about another convinient way to move personel household goods to Canada?

How does one transfer funds to Canada ?

After implementation of US VISIT programm are people from SR countries still required to register at the point of departure from US?

Thanks

Here's my 2 cents

U-haul will be the cheapest way of doing it. It's a pain if you are also going to be searching for an apt. Mind you, the big cities in Canada have lots of crime. So, keep things safe and out of sight.
As for an alternative method, try www.upack.com (ABF). I used their service to move from ID to vancouver, did it all on the web. It cost me USD 500. Very professional and good handling of personal effects. Plus, your goods reach in 2 weeks. Read the info thoroughly as there are quite a few options.
As for funds, carry some cash, traveller's checks (you will need this for rent deposit and money) and cashier's check. Cashier's check take 3 weeks to clear. Canadian banks are slow.
If you are looking for apts/suites to stay in Vancouver, www.van.net/classified is recommended.

Car And Goods

Friends:

What is the normal procedure to bring car and goods from US to Canada?

Any hassle/problems faced?

Thanks a lot.

If you open an account and deposit money, cashier's check SHOULD not take any time to clear since they have already been paid for and certified by the source bank. Done that several times. Please verify with the bank. Personal check indeed take a long time as long as you are a "new" customer.

To bring goods: Make a list with details such as item name, make and model if available and approximate value or price of the item. During landing, show the list to the customs and they will stamp your list and you are all set to bring your goods.

To import car: visit www.riv.ca

Canadian banks will hold cashier's check for 3 weeks

I recently moved here and got stuck in a huge hole with the cashier's check. They will hold it for 3 weeks, no matter what. Even if money is transferred from a friend's bank in CA to the same bank in CA , they will hold it for a day.

Thanks a lot guys for your quick response.

Tarantula, I contacted U-Pack guys and am waiting for a quote. How do they clear the Canadian Customs? I landed Last year and I have a list of "goods to follow" stamped by customs. Do I have to give this to the driver. Pl advise me from your experience and thanks a lot for the information provided by you. I intend to relocate to Toronto.

Dimple 101, I have a further question. When we cross the border with more than CAD 10,000 we have to submit a form to the custom people.Supposing someone opens an account in a canadian bank and deposits his personal cheque drawn on an American Bank do we still need to fill out that form and submit to the bank/customs?
thanks

I am assuming that you are using the door-to-door method. In that case, hand a copy of the goods to follow to the driver. I did the terminal to terminal move and gave a copy of my goods to follow to the terminal folks there. I also landed prior to my final move. As for the quote, you should have got it by email instantly (if you did it through the web). Make sure you have a residence within 2 weeks of your move to Toronto since they ship it really quick.

Thanks Tarantula

One more question. The quote I recieved is from door to door. It states that I have to provide a copy of list of goods showing their Dollar value to the origin driver and that the custom clearence will occure at the local canadian customs office.

Will this be the border crossing customs office or some office in destination city. Am I required to be physically present at the time of this clearence process. What was your experience?

Thanks

Siyyid

ABF will call you

Once the goods reach the border, ABF will call you and let you know. You will then have to show up at the border customs office and clear the goods. The process takes an hour.
Since I did a terminal move, I had to get the papers from the ABF terminal and take it to customs. Their terminal was right at the border. I did not have any issues at the border.
I would call up ABF and ask them how many days they have to clear the goods once it crosses the border. Most Canadian cities are close to the border, so I don't think you will have a problem going there. Unless, you are moving to the Northwest territories :)
