Moving and Border questions

Hello!

I am a U.S. citizen. I have been residing and working in Canada for the past six years. I have a current Work Authorisation (renewed every year, thank you NAFTA!), current BC (British Columbia) driver's license, and current U.S. passport.

I am planning to return to the States permanently at the end of next month (August).

My husband and I have decided to rent a moving truck from Seattle, Washington...drive it to Victoria, BC (where we live)...pack it up...then drive it back through to Washington and to our final destination. this will mean two trips across the Border...one with an empty truck...and one with a loaded truck.

When we moved to Canada, we had no trouble at the Border Crossing. But, we were in a car (not a moving truck) and it was before September 11th.

My question is...should we anticipate anything specific at the Border Crossing? Will there have to be an inspection of the truck? (if so, this could affect how we pack and load it)

We will have two cats with us...they already met the Border Crossing Guards when we moved here ;) ...so I know to have their Immunization records handy.

We are just wanting to be as prepared as possible. Any suggestions, tips, and info would be most appreciated! :)

Thanks in advance,

Denaunie

-- You have no need to be concerned. You are a US citizen and you are entitled to enter the US. Even if they inspect the truck, they do not tear it apart!! :-) So do not worry, you will be fine...Just be honest to them regarding what you have and you will be across the border within minutes..

Have a nice trip back home!

Thanks!

Thanks a bunch Big for the reply! :D

We had heard that if we decided to ship our things back to the States, that every box would have to be unpacked and sifted through thoroughly, unless we had someone else professionally pack our things or pick up things from our house. After looking into the cost of that, we decided to rent the truck and do it ourselves instead.

We'll anticipate being checked just to be safe (and not surprised! ) but it sounds like it should be okay. Every other time across the Border has been just fine, the guards have been really nice in fact, so hopefully this will be no different. ;)

Thanks again,

Denaunie
