Moving after filing N-400

I am eligible for filing N-400 application for citizenship in Nov. 2013. This is after having green card for 4 years and 9 months. I have been resident of Illinois for 2 years and this is where I file.

I then have to move for a new job in New York at the end of January 2014. Given the current processing times, this means I would probably have the finger print done in Illinois and my interview should have been scheduled before I move to New York.

What happens then, should I fly back to Illinois to do my interview or when I move to New York my interview in Illinois is canceled and they forward my case to New York and then new York schedule an interview for me in New York 3 month after I moved?

Same question for the Oath?

The interviewer in Illinois won't agree to interview you after knowing that you've moved to New York. You would need to file a change of address and continue the case in New York. But changing your address during the process is risky, because USCIS is often very slow and inconsistent to process address changes, resulting in lost mail and missed appointments and delays.

Thank you for the reply. If I wait until end of January when I move, then I have to wait for an extra 3 month after moving to New York to be eligible to file. This means 2 and the half month wait until I move to New York and then an extra 3 month wait to be eligible to file in New York i.e. a total of 5 month and a half delay!

I was thinking to file in Nov. I will definitely have my fingerprint done before I move and if I am lucky like some of the cases I see on the forum I might even have my interview done before moving to New York, then I will need to just move my file for the Oath.

Do you know if they have scheduled me for interview in IL already before I move, and then I file an address change then will cancel that and reschedule something for New York or they give me interview time in IL which I would have to attend even though them might just reject and send it to New York?

Thanks again

I would wait until you move and the file. I moved from one address to another in the same district and it cost me a lot of time.If I was not very insistent i would probably be still waiting. They lost my notices 5 times and sent it to the wrong address :-(

Hi

Did you fill change of address by both AR-11 and calling the phone number for pending applications? Do you think I will be delayed for more than 5 month if I move in the middle of application? Because if I wait to apply I will be delayed for 5 month and a half!

Your options:

1) File in IL, you will probably get FP done there. Then you will be moving to NY and filing AR-11.
As been said previously, change of address will not help you to speed up the process.
Also, remember that current NYC processing times are way over national average and it gets at very least 6 months to process. You can do the math yourself.

2) Move to NY and file here after you serve 3 months in NY. Sure 5 months delay, but no risk of additional delays due to address change.

3) Stay in IL until the case is done, then move to NY - this will be the fastest option.

Its all about your priorities.
