Misprint of Name in Passport

Urgent-Misprint of Name in Passport

I really need your help.
My name in the Passport is as follows
Surname
-
Given Names
Gopal krishna

My first name is Krishna and last name is Gopal. When I applied for my H1-B visa the lawyer filed my name as Gopal, Krishna.
Now I need to go India on an emergency visit to see my cousin who is not well. So I have to get my H1-B stamping done in Chennai.
I was really concerned because my name in my passport is misprinted and it differs from my name in my H1-B visa petition.
So I went to the Indian embassy in NY today. They asked me to post 2 Ad's for Change in Name in the newspaper one in USA and the other in the place of residence in India. After 30 days they asked me to fill a Change in Name form and submit my passport.
I called the New York Classified #'s and they said that I need to have a legal document from the court which gives me the Index #. I called the concerned people in the court and they say that my name has not changed and shall not provide me with a document.

I need to go to India urgently and I am not sure whether this shall create a problem for my H1-B stamping.
Kindly please advise what should I do and how could I Change my misprinted name in the passport. Can this be done in India.

Please reply as soon as possible.

A Few questions first

Can you tell me how is the name in all the documents. Like your 10th standard marks card and the certificate. Your degree certificate.

I had similar problem. My first name had become last and my last name had become first name. So i took my 10 class certificate and told them that all my names are the same. But when they wrote it in the passport they wrote it wrong.
So at the indian consulate they checked my documents and put an observation on my passport.
This is a very simple procedure. You dont have to go through the hassle of putting adds.
Just go back to the indian embassy and show them your education certificate and they will do it with in a day.
But for that you need to have the documents.
Please mention to them as change or order of name and not change of name.

I am also in the same scenario where my first name is missipelt by one alphabet. I have all my other documents including GC in my correct name.

Can you more detail about when and where was the correction done. How long back your passport was originally issued.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

My passport was issued in india in 1997.

But i came to know about it only after i got my US visa stamped. Because the visa had the name other way round.

I got this rectified at the SF Indian Embassy. But this was sometime back. 2003

You can also get it done.
 
Fnu-name under surname name

actually in my passport & educational documents
my complete name (Rami Prasad)is under given name,surname blank
i.epassport
surname:blank
given name:ram prasad

but the visa(H1B) which i got (H1B)
it is like this

surname:ram prasad
given name:FNU

FNU-means first name Unknown ,so pls let me know will there be any problem wt the port of entry ..if not how should i proceed in future after stepping into us ...how should i refer with passport name/visa name for further paper work(I-94,ssno...) in US..
kindly give reply as iam planning to come USA in march..

I had a friend who had the same problem. But he got his visa in a different way.

Given name : xxxx
surname : LNU ( last name unknown)

I had the same issue - I recently got the names reversed (that is, corrected to read correctly) with an Observation in the passport. Is this enough or should I worry about actually applying for a name change and get a new booklet issued? Did you have any difficulty at the port of entry in the US with the Observation about the name correction? I just don't want to take chances.

How long did it take for you to get the Observation done in India..Im having the same problem, im travelling to india this week. and hence need to get the observation done in India.
 
Not sure how long it takes in India but for myself, the passport office at the Embassy in DC did it on the same day. FYI - my new passport was issued from Washington DC.

I got it done within an hour at the Chicago Consulate.

ineffiency

I been hearing this name surname problems when will The issuing authority to wake up to nip in the bud.
prevention is better than cure. is there any proper training for the staff?
or is frequent problem is not communicasted between issuing authority and the highcommmision.
still the same problem continuing inspite of correctly filled application.
Some Indias(govt in particularly ) still in 18th century i think. They dont have the concept of 'user/customer frendly'.
