A friend of ours after relocating found that he misplaced his I-485 original reciepts. What could be the consequences.....

Don't bother

Tell him not to bother. I have not received my receipt notice for my I 485 (may be lost in mail??). My attorney called INS and requested for a duplicate. They gave the receipt number and said they can't issue a duplicate receipt notice. I am hanging in here without a receipt notice. I got my EAD, AP also FP done.It should not be a problem as per my attorney.

* If we have to travel abroad, some people say, at transit airport locations they ask for 485 notice along with AP before boarding. Can someone throw some light on this?

Nebraskan,

I travelled outside USA on Advance Parole and I had my I-485 receipt with me but BCIS officer never asked for the receipt. She looked into the computer and told me that I am under "adjustment of status". She stamped on 3 sets of AP and returned 2 sets to me.

People advise that its better to carry your receipt while travelling.

Guys!

I am not saying that BCIS officers at immigration check points in US ask for 485 receipts. Some people at VSC forum have said about their experience that, people at frankfurt airport asked for 485 receipt notice for issuing the boarding pass. Other person had to show his notice at some airport in India.

Here at US immigration they know very well about AP so they won't ask a copy of your notice other than AP.

Thanks.

Receipt notice is not at all important. When you travel outside, keep all the relevant papers with your safe re-entry. AP is the only document, you needed.

A couple of months back I used my AP to return to US from India. I did not carry my 485 receipt but was never asked for it. In India, on my way back at the airport, I was asked to produce my AP papers because I did not have a valid stamp on my passport.
