Someone would have encountered this, please help
I and my wife got my last name changed ( infact just one letter difference from previous ) during citizenship. My wife's first name changed too, essentially shortening her multiworded first name.
My question is will my kids last name follow automatically ? Or should I get a local court order for it ? Both my kids are born in India and less than 16 years old.
If I have to go for county court ( a long 45 day process and I have to drive to downtown ) for this, I as well change their first name, shortening it to what they are actually called. They also have multi worded first name.

Hi there,

Yes from what you have described below, you will have to formally get their name changed. So go to your local court and request a name change for your children. Once approved - and it most likely will be - you will get a name change decree which you can use - in conjunction with your children's birth certificates to get them US passports and certificate of citizenship (if you wish). Make sure you keep the decree in a safe place as it is proof of the name change. Once they get the new passport and certificate of citizenship in the new name however, they can begin to use those documents - with their new names - for all future identity needs.
