Yes, they expire in 1 year. But CIS has extended the validity twice because they recognize the expiration is often due to their backlog.

From my own recent experience, if you don't have all the shots, you will have at least a 5-week delay between going to the doctor and getting the envelope back. So what you should really do is, make sure your Td and MMR are current. Then wait for the RFE, get the medical done in 2/3 days, and send it on.

Good luck

Just wait till the ask for it. It's only a matter of 2 days before it's ready.

I sent mine w/my original application back in 2000. I was never asked for a new one.

Td = Tetenus
MMR = Measles, Mumps, Rubella

If you did not get a Td in the last 10 years, you will need it
MMR requires 2 shots, 1 month apart, unless you already had one of them (which you have to prove by blood test, which costs money)

I had measles as a child, had to prove it through a blood test ($50) and had to get the Td and 1 MMR shot

As you dont have insurance, contact your local health department; you might be able to get the shots for free.

What is your trip timeline? I received the RFE (issued on 10/5/05, received by my on 10/11) with a response date of Dec 28. So they give you almost 3 months to respond. If you can get the shots, get them and go on your trip. That way, when you come back, you can do the paperwork

Good luck

Forgot to add: The doctor will do a skin test for TB, and you need to go back the next day for another check on that. if you got BCG vaccination as a child, or come from a country where Tuberculosis is/was common, you might get a positive skin reaction, at which time you will need to get an X-ray, which will [a] cost money and take another 2 days. If the xray is clear, the doc will give you an all clear. If the X-ray also shows signs of infection, you have to go to a TB clinic and sign up for a 9-month course of antibiotic (free in most states), and once the paperwork is done, then you get the form back from the doctor.

So add this to the time required.
