I recently got my green card thru CP. Immigration officer took original CP approval notice issued form consulate.
1. What documents do I need in order to get Social Security card updated for me and new card for spouse?
2. At any point of time do I need CP approval notice or I551 stamp on passport may solve the purpose?

Congratulation on your GC. It was suggested to me to take a copy of my original CP approval notice before going to the POE. However, your I-551 stamp is what you really need for any official business.

Go to http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html, you can file your application there and print it out for a trip to your local SSN office. There are instructions on what you need to take with you.

Unfortunately, you cannot get your copy now. I think it used to be more important to have this as a document in times when plastic GC was sometimes taking almost or over a year to get.

Anyway, your I-551 in the passport is valid as your future GC will be. Your real plastic card should arrive soon. Mine came 2 weeks after crossing the border. Good luck!

Thanks for your feedback. I went to SSA office this afternoon. SSA office accepted I551 stamp in passport and did not ask for the approval notice. They instructed me to wait for 2 weeks to get the actual Social Security Card.
