Marrying a US Citizen in September 2012, leaving country for 2 weeks in Jan 2013 ok?

Definitely would appreciate some advice here.

I'm marrying a US citizen in Sept 2012 (next month). If I apply for a green card, then can I leave the country 4 months later and still re-enter?

I heard that there is a "travel document" that is around $400, but it would allow travel outside the US during the "green card pending" phase.

Currently I have an OPT visa that expires in Sept 2012. If I stay in the US while my green card is pending but my OPT has expired already, is this ok? Or do I have to leave the country even if my green card is on its way?

There is no fee for the travel document (Advance Parole) when it is in conjunction with an I-485 application. Once having filed the I-485 or having your student status expire, you won't be able to use your student visa to reenter the US after traveling abroad, but you can reenter with the Advance Parole.
