Once your status adjusted ( your green card approval date =from temporary visa stamped on passport) you can apply for citizenship after 2 years and 9 months.
Remember this, if you apply before you become eligible, your application may get rejected. You might want to wait for a few days after 2 years and 9 months before applying.
Here on page 22 it says clearly that you need 3 years permanent residency in order to become eligible. Not married for 3 years. After marriage if you apply adjustment of status which take one year to adjusted then your marriage need to 4 years I thought.
How many people qualify for that condition? It would be safe to say that most people apply for citizenship after 2 years, 9 months and 1 week. That 1 week is purely for safety purposes because your application could get rejected if you apply before you are eligible.
Remember the formula.... 2-9-1... 2 years, 9 months, 1 week. Live happy.
