Marriage - GC with non-GC visa holder

What happens in the case of a GC holder marrying a non-GC holder non-US Citizen, when the spouse's temporary visa expires and the GC Holder has filed the petition for spouse?

As JoeF mentioned, the spouse needs to maintain his/her own status, i.e., s/he cannot derive any status from the I-130 the PR filed on his/her behalf.
