I and my fiancee are in US. I am on H-1 visa and she is on OPT rite now.
We plan to get married in US only in december.
Where do we need to get the marriage certificate from.
should we goto local courts or does this have to be done thru Indian consulate.
Also, my LC has been filed. So, if i have to go for I-145, i would need a marriage certificate.
will a US marriage certificate be good enough?

Please advise.

Thanks,

VP

If you want to have marriage certificate in states, you need to call county office to know first where you need to have medical examination before marriage. For my case (in Michigan), after medical examination, you need to find which magistrate is available on your marriage day as well as 2 witnesses in the ceremory. The whole ceremony took less than 1 hour.

Good luck.

The answer given above will suffice if your purpose is to use the marriage certificate to apply for the US visa and legal matters in USA. If both of you are Indian citizens and you may need to use the certificate in India also for legal purposes. Many Indian jurisdictions may not accept the US marriage certificate, unless it has been authenticated by the local Indian consulate. Therefore it may not be a bad idea to get info from the Indian consulate and register the US issued certificate, if applicable & needed.
