Is marriage certificate required as evidence for I-140 or I-485? or am i missing something here....

It is required for I485.

yes indeed for I-485, in the file for your spouse only!
No need for I-140...

If you file I-485 for your spouse separately, you'll need to attach a copy of your I-140 approval. There was someone in this forum who actually got an RFE about this and had to send a copy of the I-140 approval notice for his/her spouse I-485 application.
