Maintaining Green card

If someone is on a greencard in the US, and wants to leave the US for more than a year, what is the procedure for that. Does one have to notify the USCIS prior to leaving the US ( while the person is in the US) or can it be done while abroad. What is the period of time that one has to remain in the US (out of a year) in order to maintain the greencard.

One must apply for a re-entry permit before one leaves the country. It is not neccassary to wait for approval, as it usually takes several months. Also you can say in the form that you want to pick it up from the consulate in your country.
