Maintaining GC/Citizenship requirements?

I received my GC 2 yrs back. I want to move to India next year to take care
of urgent matter which may take more than a year but at the same time do not want to loose my GC
spl after wating for it more than 4 years. What I read in various postings
that for citizenship a person has to have 2.5 yrs of physical stay in last
5 years after getting GC. Can I wait for 9 more months here making my stay
more than 2.5 years and take a re-entry permit and work in India for 1-2 years
and come back and apply for citizenship? I can pay my taxes for US
and also can show residence of my close relative in US

So my questions will be

1) Is that feasible?
2) Does period of away on re-entry permit counted towards five years after GC?
3) Any issues with above scenario

From the information you provided, it doesn't sound like you'll eligible to apply for naturalization after you come back from India. Read the instructions for N-470 in the bcis website for more information, but there are very specific requirements in order to qualify for this.

In all likelihood, you can only appy for naturalization 4 years and 1 day after you return to the US, as long as you meet the other requirements.

To qualify for citizenship, after the GC you have to ...

1) Maintain physical presence requirements
2) Maintain continues presence requirements

Seems to me gc2citizen will have #1 covered, however will need to make sure the continuous presence requirement is also met. Making a short trip before the end of each six months stay abroad should cover it, no?

Reentry permit is irrelevant for citizenship qualification.

That is not really correct. Coming back to the US every few months in an effort to maintain one's green card will not work. BCIS will see right through that, especially during the naturalization interview.

Also, a re-entry permit does have someting to do with naturalization in a sense that one does not generally need the permit unless s/he is going to be out of the country for more than 1 year.

What if..

Thanks everybody for the information..

Here's what I found from bcis web site

Residence and Physical Presence

An applicant is eligible to file if, immediately preceding the filing of the application, he or she:

1) has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence (see preceding section);
2) has resided continuously as a lawful permanent resident in the U.S. for at least 5 years prior to filing with no single absence from the United States of more than one year;
3) has been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the previous five years (absences of more than six months but less than one year shall disrupt the applicant's continuity of residence unless the applicant can establish that he or she did not abandon his or her residence during such period)
4) has resided within a state or district for at least three months

According to this I would satisy 1,3,4 because I would have residency of more than 30 months in US (will be filing taxes to prove that i have not abondan residence) but not 2 (if i stay > 1yr).. What If I do return before a year gets over and then go back for one more year (that way I will have 5 years since my GC). Wouldn't that satisy condition 2 .

What if you are transferred to India by a US company and you have to work there but get an option to come back every 6 months?
