Loyalty payment. Useful?

Hi,

I received a check an institution. It says that my dissertation was sold x copies in 2004, so they pay me $$ dollars for loyalty.

Not sure if this is useful. Someone said that every Ph.D. would receive that kind of payment so it is nothing. I believe most here have a Ph.D. Did anyone receive a similar payment?
