I'm an international student who has been studying in the US (under F1 visa)for the past 5 years. I got engaged this summer - my fiancee was also an international student in the US and very recently got a job (the past March) and has changed his visa status from F1 to H1B. We are planning to get married soon. I am also unhappy in my present line of work and would like to go in for a career change. Ideally, I'd like to quit the degree I am working toward currently, take a short break (one or two months) to prepare for the wedding and application to another program and then enroll in university again for a different degree. I'm worried about how all these major changes in my life are going to affect my visa status and honestly i'm just plain confused. Am i correct in understanding that after marriage i will be under H4 visa? If i am dependant under my to-be husband's visa can i then still be a student? or how does this all work? Please advise me - I'm worried about all the major changes in my life and how to make the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle of my life fit right now and I really will appreciate all the guidance you all can give me.

You have a lot going on for you.

Just try to relax and take one day at a time.

Re:changing your current course of study, there are a lot of things you have to consider including - what is the real motive behind this change of course, how far have you gone ie how many years have you invested in the course so far, cos if you have invested a significant amount of time, it may not be a wise idea to just quit and throw away all those years, you never know what the current may have for you in the future. Something must have attracted you to the course in the first place.

You may be better of completing this course first especially if you don't have much time left, then starting the new one you have in mind. By the way, what course are you currently enrolled for?

Being married to a H1 holder makes you eligible for H4, you can go to school, train etc on H4 but you cannot work on H4.
