The US consulate in Mumbai recently lost my ORIGINAL I-797[h1b approval]
I'm in pending AOS[I-485] status with an approved EAD.

Do I require to have the ORIGINAL I-797 for any purpose? If yes how
do I get duplicate? Please advise. Thx

No, you don't need original. A copy should be good enough for future reference and travel. In fact I myself never had or carried original because they were always with attorney and employer.
Sometimes when you do not go abroad for long time and as a result your I-94 expired (and H1 got renewed meanwhile), you need to get I-94 part (at the bottom part of I-797) from your attorney/employer. But as you got stamped and re-entered ( or going to re-enter), that situation does not araise for you.

The DMV here in my state needs to check ORIGINAL I-797 to get new ID for my wife.
Is there any way to have a duplicate issued by USCIS?
