Lost Naturalization Certificate in mail

Looks like my story with USCIS is not going to end soon....

I have applied for the passport and got it within 2 weeks. But my naturalization certificate did not came in. It's been almost 3 weeks since I got my passport.

I called the passport office and they said we have sent it (also sent a letter stating that and I received that letter). They said I might have to apply for a new naturalization certificate.

Any idea how much time it would take to get a new naturalization certificate with N-565?

Is there anything I can do to get the $380 from passport office since it is their mistake (to send it via ordinary mail)?

Please let me know my options.

Thanks
Homer

Dammit! Just when i was trying to get over my fears of sending the nat cert in the mail to apply for a pp!!
sorry i don't have any advice for you, but your post scared the hell out of me

Lost certificates are a very, very rare thing. Give it a few days more and it might appear in the mail. Please report back if you get the certificate, as many people are very apprehensive about sending their certificates for passport application, and posts like this make people really nervous. I was in the same situation when I applied for my passport, and the certificate showed up, later than expected, but it showed up.

Good luck.

Yeah, HomerSimp: please do post if you get yours back...that will make many a human sleep better at night, incl. moi.

You can ask your local post office to do an investigation. Most likely they should have a electronic record. I would say the lost of a government mail is a very rare case. Is your mailbox secure? Is there any one also having access to your mailbox?

I applied passport several times recently (for my kids with birth certificates, both me and my spouse with Naturalization certificates). I have no issues so far. Received the birth certificate/Naturalization Certificate several days after the passport. In my spouse's case, they actually put the passport and certificate in the same priority mail envelop and we receive them together.

Do we have to apply for the passport via mail. Are their locations we can go in person? I'm ready to drive or fly to that place, for real

yeah; unfortunately we have to do it via mail, UNLESS you're traveling withing 14 days (and can show proof of it), or need a visa to a certain country in haste, and then you can go in person to a pp agency and get it done without mailing. Otherwise, no option but to mail.

cregan,

You have to go in person to a passport acceptance agency (e.g. local post office) for application. The passport book will be sent to you by mail (or expressed mail if you pay extra). If for emergency travel, you have to make appointment with regional passport agency.

Check www.state.gov.

Good luck for your case.

Washburn27 & compaqdb, thank you. My dad will need a visa to travel, so I wont be worried. As for me ... in a while (kinda lol) I think I will wait until I buy my tickets to visit home. I have weird bad luck so I don't trust mailing the certificate :)

mosamno2, please see http://boards.immigration.com/showthread.php?t=194681&page=595 the sticky thread. There are great people there that have helped me process my WOM. I'm always in there too, so I'll be happy to help if I can

HomerSimp, I hope yours will show up in the mail. Good Luck.

Good news guys....

Looks like they searched my file again and found the certificate... and they sent it via Fedex (2nd day delivery)... What a relief....

Thank you all for your valuable suggestions, comments & support..

Yes... my mail box is secure and I would suggest you to keep your mail box secure.

I can sleep peacefully now....

It sounds like it was the passport agency. I am glad the certificate showed up. I am afraid that just waiting wouldn't have solved your problem, so it is good that you called them to make sure. I also did call them once when my certificate took long to show up, but I was given the standard wait for two or three weeks and call us back if you don't receive it. I received it a few days later and that was the end of it.
