Lost Green Card: Can I apply for N400?

I've applied for a replacement card (I-90), and done with FP & am waiting on physical card. I also have a stamp in my passport valid for 1 yr. Not sure, how long it will take for USCIS to send me a replacement card?
I do qualify (> 5 yrs with GC) for naturalization (US citizenship). Can I apply?
When do I need to surrender my GC during the nautralization process?
Any insights highly appreciated.

Thanks
Ram

I know one person who got the replacement green card in about 2 months time. Since your FP for the replacement card is already completed you are closer to getting the plastic card.

I suggest you hold-off till you get the plastic GC because they ask for your green card while FP'ing for the N-400 and at each step thourgh N-400. So to keep things simple for you and for USCIS wait for your plastic card. The wait now is really worth it compared to delays you might experience while processing N-400 if you don't have the plastic GC.

Finally, you will surrender your GC at the oath ceremony. It is like swapping your GC to the Naturalization certificate that you will use to apply for the US passport.
