Lost employment = lost of greencard?

Hi,

just for my curiosity. My close friend has DV lottery based greencard. Can he loose it if he looses his employment? Or, does being unemloyed for a long time means that one can loose greencard?

It's not an employment-based green card, so being unemployed will have no effect on the green card.

However, taking welfare benefits could jeopardize his green card under certain circumstances. It's perfectly fine to take unemployment benefits though.

Thanks Jackolantern!

He is not considering taking any welfare benefits. But he really want to become US citizen. Does this have any negative effect on naturalization either?

No effect on naturalization, except that if he's unemployed for a very long time (like over a year or so), he might have to explain to the naturalization interviewer how he financially supported himself during that time ... for example living off savings, unemployment checks, supported by spouse or parents, student loans. And he should bring evidence of that to the interview in case the interviewer wants to see it -- banks statements, spouse or parent's tax return, unemployment/student loan paperwork etc.

The reason they may ask about long periods of unemployment is because if you don't have a good explanation, they'll suspect that you were secretly working for cash without paying taxes, or making money from criminal activities.
