I've lost my backpack with my passport, I-94, and my DS-2019 :( I'm in the USA on a J1 visa. I've received my new DS-2019, and my new passport from my country. I've also applied for lost I-94 replacement and i'm still waiting for a replay. My question is will i have problems leaving the country with my new passport if my new I-94 doesn't come till i leave the country, and if it comes it will be with the old passport number on it do you think i'll have some problems with that? Thank you in advance!

If I were you, i'll wait till the replacement i94 arrives, cos you have to give it to the airline staff when you are leaving the country, that'll be the evidence on record with uscis that u left the country and did not overstay.

If your passport is lost then you should get your duplicate passport by providing the information at your country (India/pakistan/europian/uk consulate in US and not getting the new passport from your home country. As long as you have the duplicate passport, DS-2019 and I-94 you should be fine. But don't leave the country without having I-94 which you have applied. Hope this helps.

thank's for the information. I'll try to call the bulgarian consulate for duplicate but i don't think that's possible. I was there a month ago, i told them about the situation and they told me that i have to apply for new passport in Bulgaria, so that's what i did. I have copies of my lost passport but i don't know if that will help. So i have my new passport already. I hope the new I-94 won't take 4 months because it's end date is after 2 monts. And if it comes do you think it will be a problem having my i-94 with the lost passport number and my new passport?! thank you

Have both passports got the same number or different? then the new passport should be a duplicate of old one even though I am not from bulgaria. As it is I-94 card will not have your passport number but it is certainly associated with your old passport. did you lodge a police complaint that you have lost your passport and other documents? if not do it and have a copy of the report. That will help in case if you encounter any problem at the airport.

I've called in the bulgarian consulate a few minutes ago and they said that they can't make me such thing like a "duplicate passport". My new passport number is different than my old one. I tried to make a report in the police but they needed a letter which says that i've ever been issued a bulgarian passport and i should take this letted from the bulgarian consulate! But when i asked there - gues what: "That's bullshit, we can't give you such letter!" so i couldn't make police report. I have copies of all my lost documents - the lost passport, the page with the visa and the DS-2019 form. When i called the bulgarian consulate the guy told me that i "shoud not" have problems leaving the country with my new passport and a copy of the old one, but i'm not sure about that..i'm leaving in 2 months and i wanna make sure that i have done averything that depends on me so that i won't have problems leaving the USA. If you have some information about such cases i'll be very thankful. Thanks

Do one thing. Probably you would have given a copy of your new passport to your international office who issued you DS-2019 (I guess you are working in a university) and try to get a letter from the director saying that they have got a copy of your new passport because you lost your passport bla bla.. That should work when you are leaving th ecountry. are you going to come back to US again to continue J-1 OR you are leaving once for all. what about your visa stamp on your old passport. for how many years US visa is valid on your old passport which you lost. If the visa stamp is still valid you ask your international office what to do. Because if you do not have visa stamp on your passport while coming back (assuming that you visa stamp is valid as per your old passport) to US you will face problems. think over it.

Well my J1 is valid for 4 months and expires on Sep 15 2006.My DS-2019 also expires then and respectively my I-94. I'm not planning to go back to the USA for now, I just want to make sure that on 10th of September i will be able to leave the country without facing serious problems. When I went to the Homeland Security Office in New York, the officer said that it takes somewhere around a month to get the new I-94, but they also said that i shouldn't have problems leaving the country without it! I applied for my new I-94 a month ago, so i'm waiting for a replay soon. So i think that with my new passport, copy of the old passport, new I-94 and my DS-2019 i should be fine, but you never know... I'm not sure about this report..that was the first thing i wanted to do but then I saw what the bulgarian consulite really is...i hope it won't cost me troubles. I'll try to get the letter from the director of my sponsorship organization (CIEE in my case) and i'll ask them if i need something else. Then I'll just go to the airport and we'll see what will happend! ;) Thank all of you for the help, thanks madgu-gc2005 you helped me alot! If you have any other ideas i'll be glad to hear them. Thanks again! :)

If you are not coming back once for all to US then you don't need to worry about leaving US. Nobody at the airport will stop you. I gave you some ideas because probably in the near future you might want to come back. U never know. Better on safter side be prepared to safeguard you.

Good luck with your future endeavour.
