Lost Citizenship certificate-? Do I have to replace it ?

Folks, I have lost my Naturalization Certificate....during the recent relocation to NYC area. I have a color copy. I have obtained Citizenship last November (2009). Following the Naturalization, I have applied and obtained US Passport and US Passport Card.

What should I do ? Can any one give me a reason why should I apply and waste $380 for a new replacement for Citizenship ?

I assume if I keep my US passport and US Passport Card safe, I should be ok in terms of proving US Citizenship status.

I yet to update SOSA records and register for vote. I assume I can do those using my US Passport or US Passport Card ?

I am thinking...For US passport renewal in future, I can use US Passport Card or expired US Passport ?

In future, also if I sponsor my overseas family, I assume the US Passport or US Passport Card will be sufficient for I-130 application....Does UZIS recognize the valid US Passport Card as a proof of citizenship.

Sorry for too many questions. I do not mind spending 380 ..my concern is that due to poor job market I may relocate from state to another..I have heard that it may take up to 6 month or more to get a replacement for Naturalization Certificate.

Did I miss anything ? Please help....and advise.

Thank you

For the color copy you have, write or stamp the word COPY on it, otherwise it may be seen as a forgery.

The passport is sufficient for sponsoring a family member or updating Social Security. And since you have a copy of the certificate, you can send a photocopy of it along with the application.

There is no urgent need to replace the certificate; wait until your passport is within one year of expiring, so you'll have the certificate to use in case you need to prove citizenship when your passport is being renewed.

You can wait until you really need the naturalizaiton certificate. Of course, by then the fee to get it replaced may have gone up. The passport doesn't have a 'citizen since...' date on it so if you need to prove the date you became USC for any purpose, you may need to get a replacement Natz Certificate.

Jack, I do not believe Certificate is required for Passport renewal if Old or expired passport or US passport card is available. Per passport application rules, either passport or passport card can be sufficent to prove US citizenship for DS 11 (lost passport) and/or DS 82 (renewal) application purposes.

I am not sure about this but natz certificate is needed to update Social security office. The new everify system requires ssa to have a copy of certificate with them to verify you as a citizen.

Get a replacement one now. You never know when you will need one..

are you sure about this ? US Passport is listed as one of proof docs for US Citizenship for SS-5. What is your reference doc ?

hello want

i don think you need naturalization certificate to update your social security record, you can do it with a US passport

i updated my record after i got my passport, recently i called the SSA and they confirmed to me that my record was updated to american citizen

The problem is that the day you need a certificate you won't be able to obtain it in a few days unless you can prove it is an emergency. You might live a happy live without needing one, but when you do I tell you I have seen a few people in this forum sweating bullets because they couldn't rebuild their identity without the certificate (i.e. getting a social security card or driver license or similar things if they lost the certificate and didn't have passports). How did you lose the certificate so soon? Are you sure it is lost, and not just misplaced? I would try hard to find it and save the $380. Otherwise I would apply sooner rather than later when the process could be more expensive and troublesome. Not a huge hurry anyway.
