Lose Green Card?

My husband got his green card in 2001. In May, we moved to a foreign country, not the country of his citizenship. We have no plans of returning to the US in the near future. How long can he be gone before he automatically loses his green card? If he does not want to give it up, what would he need to do in order to keep it? If he does lose it, how difficult would it be to get it back again? I am a US citizen and we have 6 minor children who are all US citizens. Thank you for your help.

He has to live and work in the US. Anytine it is believed that he is no longer living in the US, he can lose his GC.

He gets it back by you filing for him as the spouse of a US citizen.

You lose the green card one year after you leave US without returning unless you have obtained a re-entry permit which allows absence up to 2 years.

Return to the US and apply for a reentry permit. It must be applied for in the US.

If you move back to the US you can sponsor him for another green card (processing is about 6-12 months). But he may have to wait outside the US during that 6-12 months process.
