Alright, so just when i thought i was about to send my application, i re-checked my tax status.

So for the year 2009, i didn't file my Local Taxes, because i moved halfway and didn't bother much,(i did file my State and Federal). So i went ahead and got my forms out and saw that i owed $100 to the city i was living in.

I called them up and did pay my dues. Now my question is, where they ask in the form that if i failed to file taxes, should i say YES or NO ?

I see it that i did fail to file one local tax, but then i did came back and did it. So not sure what should i answer.

Any advice.

Late filing is not treated as failing to file.

You eventually filed the local tax return, so you can answer NO to having failed to file a required return.

failure to file local taxes is a common thing because people often do not know they need to file especially if they live in apartments rather than owned houses. If everyone here revist all places one had lived since coming to USA, a lot of us woudl find he/she once failed to file a local taxes.

So don't take honesty to the extreme

The thing is, i am a student and have lived in a couple places. Like you said, i have always lived in an apartment, and keeping track was never easy. I just made sure that i did pay all my Federal and State tax, which have been all good.

I did manage to re-do my 2006 taxes and send it to the city. I think i will wait till next week, before i send my application.

I'll just say - forget about tis issue and just file your application.

I know a professor who never filed state tax and teh state never bother (maybe state think
it is in the ineterests of state anyway since tax is already withheld and if teh professor file
tax return he would get tax refund).

When the professor filed his citizneship application, he jusy proudly answer No
to that question "Have you ever failed to file fed, STATE, and local tax return?"

Thanks for the advice. I did end up sending the amount that i owed, which wasn't that much. Will be sending my application tomorrow.
