Living in the US, Working in Canada?

Hi there,

I hope I am posting in the right place.

I am a US citizen with landed immigrant status in Canada. My husband, (whom is Canadian,) and I live in Canada, and he has a great job here very close to the US border.

I noticed that in a town just across the border in the US, the housing prices are a little more affordable.

Could we live in the US and he could keep his job in Canada? (I am a stay at home mom.)

How would medical work? Who would we pay taxes to? I'm guessing he would need some sort of immigration status?

Has anyone heard of doing this?

Any help would be great.

Thank you!

Amy

-- You will have to have some serious explanation for the cdn immigration officers in order to keep your cdn PR status alive. Being a spouse of cdn citizen, it will be doable (in my opinion). For how long? - I do not know.
(this situation will arise when you are not living in Canada)

How would medical work?

-- This could be a problem. Cdn health care covers you FULLY, only when you are residing in Canada.

Who would we pay taxes to?

-- To both countries. This is not a simple question to answer - but in a nutshell, your husband will pay cdn taxes and get the foregin tax credit when he files his US tax forms (because he is living in the US at that time)

I'm guessing he would need some sort of immigration status?

-- This is the toughest part. In fact, if you are serious about this plan, this will be the first question to answer/solve and then go according to the answer. You will have to sponsor him for the US green card. Being a spouse of the USC, he cannot get a temporary US immigration status to live in the USA.
