Living 3 Months within a State before filing N-400

I am very confused about this requirment and appreciate if I get help and answers from helpful members please.

What this living 3 months in a Sate actually means? Does it mean living at least for 3 months in a state or living 3 months in that state immediately prior to filing, no matter how long you have lived there previously?

I have lived all 5 years in just one state that is CA. Suppose I have 1 month trip abroad and when I come, do I still have to wait 3 month before I can apply? This is a tricky requirment and I dont get it. I did a research on it but no where it is explained well. Any one from their experince please advise.

If you are just visiting some other place for a month then you can count that in your three months requirment.

Thanks amishah and Joef,

So according to what you are saying, I can go on a one month vacation and when I come back I can immediately apply without waiting another 3 months, right? As I said I have been living in CA in the past almost 4.6 years and I am eligible to file N-400 in the month of April, now I am planning a trip to India in mid feb to mid March and I am concerned that when I come back in mid March, would I still be able to file in April or does that mean my 3 months residency in CA in the past 3 months of filing breaks? I appreciate a little more explanation on this as I really dont wanna wait anothe 3 months after I come back. Please help me understand this well.
Thanks much

You will still be able to apply after your trip. Don't worry. You are fine.

What if I visit my family in outside the US for 4 months, can I count that in my 3 months requirement?

Even though you were outside US for 4 months (possibly on vacation), your primary residency is still in US.

So it is not necessary to be physically present in the state for consecutive 3 month prior to filing. This is good :) I was really worried about my situation.

Still, do you guys think I consult an immigration lawyer regarding this 3 month thing or you guys are very much sure about it out of your own experiences?

Thanks for every one being so helpful

Let me rephrase it for you:

As long as your address in US for the last 3 months has not changed, you are fine. Doesn't matter where you ate or slept... :D
