can someone tell me that what these number stand for. I read somewhere that first two for YEAR, Then NUMBER OF DAYS Then 5 is for employment base case and the rest is application number ....is this true, it cant be coz my RD is may and the mid number calculation shows its February case....can someone educate me please....thanks

The three middle numbers are USCIS's business day of that fiscal year starting from October 1st. So, October 1st is day 001. When counting forward, do not count USCIS holidays, nor any weekend days

according to that calculation my RD or ND should be March 22 not May 5th coz the mid number I have is 173

mine is 180 - notice date was May 15.

curiousgeorge said it correctly, it is not calendar days, you need to take out weekends and holidays. (ie., on the last day of fiscal year for uscis sep. 30, the number would not be 365).

Also, the middle three numbers are not receipt date but rather notice date.

Thank you so much....we both should see approval on very close dates with each other:)

Scroll down this link to the caption 'Your Receipt:' for more info.

For most applications filed at a Service Center, your receipt may look like this: LIN 99 001 50001. In this example, the LIN represents the Nebraska Service Center, where the application was initially received into the electronic system. Cases that are filed at or received by another Service Center but processed at the NSC will generally carry the designation of the originating Service Center:

LIN = Lincoln, Nebraska or NSC
EAC = St. Albans, Vermont or VSC
SRC= Dallas, Texas or TSC
WAC= Laguna Niguel, California or CSC

In the example above:

The 99 represents the fiscal year (October 1, through September 30) in which the case was received.
The 001 represents the computer workday in the fiscal year on which the fee was taken.
The 50001 represents the particular case number.

Well yeah ... if its ***04, then your application notice date is in FY 04

BTW, there is no category or something for each fiscal yr.
The supposed processing date moves over as months ... so there is really no difference

First the alphabets -- Service Center
Next 2 digits --- Fiscal Year Starting from Oct 1st
Next 3 digits --- Business day in the FY
Next digit --- If 5 available through automated servies like phone / internet
Next 4 digits --- Number of application received on that day

HTH

so when someone says USICS processing 2003 cases means I am one of them ?

No, you are 2004 case as you filed in fiscal year 2004, even though the calender year was 2003. USCIS FY starts from 0ct 01 and ends on Spet 30. So FI 2003 starts on 10/01/2002 thru 09/30/2003. All case filed after 09/30/2003 fall under next fiscal year - 2004.

Assume you filed on May 15, 2003

There are approximately 227 days from Oct 2002 to May 15.
Out of 227 days there are around 56 days (weekend Sat, Sunday)

If you subtract 56 from 228 then you get 172
May xx,2203 is business day 172

Therefore your lin number should look like LIN031725xxxx

Let x be the number of days between Oct 2002 to May 2003
Let y be the number of weekend days between Oct 2002 to May 2003

~~ x - y = number of business days between Oct 2002 to May 2003.

x = 228
y = 56

x - y = 172

Based on my assumption file date for the above case is May 13,2003

Therefore your file date is somehow right.

great explanation...thank you so much

The twist is that sometimes data entry occurs on Saturdays, and in that case, saturday counts as a business day. For e.g. my ND is 4/27/02 which is a saturday, and my corresponding LIN is 171.
