from what i am reading LOR looks like very important, which is kind of frustrating because if one has good network one can get great recos.

so is it true that you can support your claims of outstanding based on your referees words??

I am sure many of us would have got RFE about LORs, any comments on that will be appreciated.

You don't need a good network. Just write to the top guys and explain your situation. You will be surprised how many are willing to help you with a recommendation letter (if you give them a template).

Thats correct!
Your resume should speak well. Send all possible guys well drafted letter wlong with well written resume & work description. Many recommenders give letter beyond expectation.

dont be shy. sharmana nahee. if you need five letters, send requests to ten of them. you will be surprised. you are neither the first nor the last request that these bigshots have gotten. if you have a good resume, most will be willing. of course some may turn you down as they may be looking at important deadlines like NIH grants etc but you will still get some good recos. the best part is that you hardly lose anything. its not like CIS has a cap on how many experts you can seek letters from.
 
thanks guys, thats what i am doing, but its such a tedious process that it intimidates on approaching anyone, i guess i will just don thick skin and keep trying till i get the number of LORs
