Length of Marriage before Citizenship

I assume you're referring to marriage-based naturalization. 3 years of marriage to a US citizen is required, and the citizen must have held US citizenship for at least 3 years.

But there is also the regular 5-year rule for naturalization, for which you can apply based on being a permanent resident for 5 years, and you are not required to be married to anybody.

Read the Guide to Naturalization for more details: www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf

How long does someone have to be married to a US citizen before they can apply for citizenship?

1. You must have been a green card holder for three years (look at the resident since date on your green card) and
2. You must have been married to the US citizen for three years and
3. Your US citizen spouse must have been a US citizen for at least three years.
