Leisure travel during I-90 processing

Got my error-free GC in July 06. It was in my maiden name. Am now planning to e-file an I-90 application to add my spouse's last name on my GC. Would be great if someone could clarify a couple of things -

- I understand that if I need to travel while my I90 is being processed, I can go to the local district office and get my PP stamped. However, most threads here mentioned the travel situation as either a family medical emergency or business-related. Will the district office only stamp my passport if I can prove one of the above? Is vacation travel not good enough?

- Also read that the PP is stamped for a short period of time - around 30 days. Is the stamp valid for 30 days from the date PP stamped or 30 days from date of leaving the US?

- Will the district office stamp my PP multiple times if I want to travel more than once while I wait for my replacement GC to come in?

Thanks.

1. Yes, go to your local office and explain you need to travel and require a stamp. See what they say, each office, each officer actually, will tell you something different. Personally since you are an LPR I find it absurd that they would limit your movements and demand only specific reasons to issue a stamp. It was not so for me. So called leisure travel is indeed good enough! You can read my experience:

2. Same as above, it depends on the officer. Not so in my case, I was given one full year. The stamp is valid from the date it is issued.

3. How many times you need a stamp?
If the stamp expires you need to ask for a new one.

Conclusion: make an Infopass, take original (if not sent yet), or copy of I-90 package and reasonably ask for what you need. See what they say.

As you can see from my experience I waited to see that I had a stamp in my passport before sending the I-90, just in case.

Good luck

I reside in San Jose and my experience follows:

I got my GC with my firstname misspelt and I wrote a letter to the National Benefits Center at Missouri and they advised me to file an I-90 (category d). I went to the San Jose local office before I filed it and asked them about stamping my passport. They said I needed to file my I-90 (category d) and get a receipt and once I have the receipt I can get my passport stamped. So I filed an I-90 (d) in October and waited for 6 weeks and no receipt came. Went to the local office and showed them the delivery confirmation of my I-90 along with a copy of the application and the officer said that without a receipt she can only stamp the passport for 30 days. She stamped my passport that day (Nov 30) as valid LPR till Dec 30th. They never asked me what the basis for my travel was. I think it is handled differently in different offices and each immigration officer is different!

Good luck with your case.
