Hi,
I heard some rumors that once you apply for I485 you cannot leave the US until you get the receipt.
I don't understand why. My wife has to leave the US and she just applied for I485.

She already has a valid H4 visa.

Any help appreciated.

Thank you.

based on the law the I-485 receipt is mandatory when you come back,
On the practice nobody asks to show one.

I do not want to convience you that receipt is absolutely mandatory,
(although my lawyer says that you will be not allowed to come back without I-485 receipt), I heard that on practice nobody asks receipts at the port of entry.

I just want to say if some one (border officer) asks you for the receipt, there is basis for that (even if you have valid H1/H4).

Hi,
I applied my I-485 on June 29th for July quota. I went to India on July 12th for some urgency. On July 17th USCIS started accetping I-485 applications again. I went for H1-B renewal stamping on July 26th. I came back to US on August 4th. No I-485 receipt yet.
My Lawyer said no problem so far. Let's see what happens..
