Lay off on H1-B

I am on H1-B and I got laid off. My employer confirmed that he is letting INS know about the termination of employment and this is required by law.

Now, how much time do I have before I take a decision ? Will I be out of Status ? Do I have to apply for another H1 immediately or can that be within 30 days ?
