The prevailing opinion among quite a few lawyers appears to be that one is fine as long as the INS does not adjudicate his/her case within the 180-day period. Note that Sheila Murthy has backed off this opinion to a large extent and now states that it is a good idea to remain working with the sponsoring employer for at least 180 days after filing the I-485 if possible.
