Last Name Change

I'm on a H-1 visa while my husband has a H-4. We got married last year but I've not yet changed my last name to his. I would like to do this, however, we have just applied for our 485, 140, Advance Parole and EAD. In those documents, our individual family last names have been listed.

Can I change my last name in regular documents(driver's license, credit cards etc)? Do I also need to make the changes to the above 485 and other documents. Will the change in last names delay the process? Is it advisable to wait for the 485 approval before changing my last name?

Thanks.

Help!!

I guess not many people on this board have experience in this issue. But any help would be appreciated!

How important is it to change the last name? A lot of wives here whether on H1 or H4 decide to keep their last names to avoid these hassles.

Rather not do it

There is no legel issue related to name changes... but better time moght be before filling for 140 and 485 where u can specify other names...but since u already filled i would recommend not to change it... but if it is really important then talk to ur lawyer and file amendment application...

i agree with glrao:

when we filed for I-485 only we used same last name, until that time my wife using her maiden name as her last name on her passport and visa and other US govt related stuff. Since you already applied with individual last names i suggest just keep that way otherwise it is whole big process to change the lastname now.

I was told that it will be easier to change the name after 485 approval. It is a different process all together, so dont mix it and it might delay the process...

Once you get your GC, you can change in the passport, GC and so on with the nessasary procedures.
