Hi,

We got eligibility to apply for U.S Citizenship. We want to change my wife's last name before applying for U.S Citizenship and in this process we have changed her last name in her Indian passport (passport renew time). We went to SSN office to change her last name on SSN card, so that we can change rest of accounts (banks, emplyer, insurance etc) and they asked GC with updated name. They told they can not change SSN until GC get changed with new last name.

My question to forum, can we apply for U.S Citizenship without applying for GC name change, with last name change on U.S citizenship application and provide support document like marriage certificate, and new Inidan passport with latest last name. Do USCIS consider application or reject the application or we get any complications?

Do you want us apply GC name change first and proceed with applying U.S citizenship? Please give me ur experience suggestions.

Changing name while filing N-400 is the cheapest and best way to go about. Not much of problem. In some States there is a slight delay in Oath taking. In most of the places the change of wife's last name to husband doesn't even take place in a court. USCIS offices do the same. You can check your DO threads for how long it takes for oath ceremony.

She can incorporate her name change into the citizenship process without a problem. Just specify the new name on the N-400 in the name change section, and list it in the "other names used" section (because her Indian passport has that name), and show the marriage certificate at the interview. You won't need to change the GC if you do it that way.
