Landing by road and returning the same day

Folks,
I plan to land in BC early August by road along with my spouse and child. I will be renting a car and plan to return the same day. I will be carrying the CPR form, passports, bank statement , marriage cert, goods to follow document. Could someone please answer my queries below:
1. Any other docs I need like birth cert and degree cert?
2. Will the bank statement suffice or do I have to carry a cashier's check made to self?
3. Will I face any problems returning the same day? I plan to migrate at the end of Dec '03. I still have a job currently and will be transferring to the Canadian branch of my company at the end of the year.
4. I heard that I could apply for the SIN and health cards online? Is it true?
5. Do I have to include all the serial numbers in the goods to follow list and should it be detailed? How do I account for clothes and kitchen items etc?
6. Do I have to do anything in BC after the customs formalities? In other words, can I just turn back to the US. Anything I have missed.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

1. Any other docs I need like birth cert and degree cert?

> It is advised to take all the documents that you submitted while applying for the PR. Don't have to show anything to anyone unless asked for. But its always nice to have it in the car and pull it out in the event they end up asking for the docs.

2. Will the bank statement suffice or do I have to carry a cashier's check made to self?

>A cashier's check made to self. If you are planning on taking $10k or more, have two cashier's ck for $5k each. Why...sometimes the US customs might cause a stink about $10k. Not a real big deal though.

3. Will I face any problems returning the same day? I plan to migrate at the end of Dec '03. I still have a job currently and will be transferring to the Canadian branch of my company at the end of the year.

>No, there shouldn't be any problems. If the Cdn officers ask what your plans are, tell them you are going to a friend's place to look for housing. After landing, go into Canada, drive around couple of streets, turn around and head back.

4. I heard that I could apply for the SIN and health cards online? Is it true?

>I don't think so. First timers need to apply in person.

5. Do I have to include all the serial numbers in the goods to follow list and should it be detailed? How do I account for clothes and kitchen items etc?

> Only for electronics. All others, just list the name, 2 word description and quantity. For clothes, say "Clothes" and for kitchen dishes, say "Kitchen Dishes"

6. Do I have to do anything in BC after the customs formalities? In other words, can I just turn back to the US. Anything I have missed.

> You can turn around if you wish. Just follow the officers instructions at landing if they have anything to say at all.

Happy landing....:)

Thanks...

dimple2001,
Thanks a bunch for your reply. At the site below, it's possible to apply for SIN by mail. Do you foresee any issues if I provide a vancouver address?

Also, do I really need to apply for the health card when I land since I plan to move finally by dec end. The 3 month waiting period rule indicates that you must be resident in BC before the clock ticks. So, seems like it doesn't really matter. I will be transferring to the Canadian branch of my company so will be covered by their medical plan.

Again, really appreciate your valuable response.

Looks like you can apply via mail (not online). If you are willing to mail out original documents such as PR card/Visa counterfoil etc, I guess its ok to send it out.

Yes, you can provide any address in Canada.

No, you don't have to apply for a health card right away. You can do it at your convenience.

Thanks again...

Dimple2001,
Thanks again for your helpful answers. I will post my landing experience for the benefit of future immigrants.

apply for health card when you land

Its better to apply for health card when you land. If you apply later, they would ask for proof of residence(water, electric bill etc) and all that. You got explaining and convincing to do!

why dont you contact your guru from Texas? The one who taught you oracle! :)
