Laid off, but no severance pay

Hi guys, I had my GC two years ago. And I was laid off last week after working five years there. The company (a small one, 40+ people) just told me to go. No formal document to sign. No letter of notice. No severance package. No anything!

Two months back, the president was talking about letting me go. The company wasn't making money. But he chose me because of, in his word, bad work ethics. Though I didn't agree, I worked diligently ever since, putting in extra time, not using Internet.... But I was still let go.

My question is, was I fired? If I was fired, should I get a letter explaining why? If I was laid off, should I get severance pay? Should I at least get a formal letter of notice?

I have requested a letter from the company. But until now they didn't respond. It makes me think they have something to hide.

When he said you had bad work ethics, did he say what exactly he considered to be bad? Sometimes, companies have very unusual definitions for what is ethical and what is not. I will give you a few examples. I worked for a company where a manager hired all his relatives and friends. I worked for another company where the president asked me a bunch of times to fix his computers at home for free. Maybe it is ethical to work for your boss overtime for free?
