Re: Tn to Alt
I guess the attorney's will have the filing papers with them, and also the receipt which the state sends once they receive the application. If you can get access to them, you can do a few things to track down your status
See the doleta website for your region's current processing times. If you see that the state is processing way past the date you started your application, chances are you will be at federal level, if not you will be in state.
State/Federal will also send a mail to your attorney when they forward the application to federal level, that will contain your case number as per Federal queue. Ask your lawer if he got that mail.
Now from the mail you can find out when your application went to federal, and using that you can again go to Doleta and see what the processing times are. If the date DOL the DOL is processing is way past the date your application was received by DOL (by more than 90 days) your lawyer can send a query to DOL asking for status, using the case number he got from the mail.
If you want your case number, talk to your manager/HR to see if it is company policy to withhold the case number, if so, you are almost out of luck, however you can call your DOL AVM and punch in your company's phone number to get all the cases for your company - by looking at the receive dates you can zero in on your application. (If you dont have exact date your application went to DOL, use Immigration.com to check back the archives when the state processed Aug/Sept 2001 cases - that will give you a fair idea of when your case went to DOL
Hope that helps,
