I am on H-1B which i renewed (first renewal) couple of months ago. I haven't been to India after the renewal so my visa is not stamped yet. I am about to start the labor cirtification i.e. first stage of my greencard process through PERM. After I get the labor certification will I be able to travel to India and back without having to get my visa stamped? If not then at what stage will I not need a stamping anymore?
Thanks.

In this case you need visa stamped on your passport. You will not require visa if you have AP.

Chicago Desi Thank you for the reply. Could you please tell me what AP stands for. And when is it achieved during the greencard process (through PERM). Thanks again.

AP = Adavanced parole (which is the travel document). You can apply for it at the same time your file EAD (employment authorization) . The basis for both is the filing of I-485. You can only file I-485 if a visa number is available (no retrogression or unavailable category like EB-3 right now). It takes between 1-3 months after filing to get AP, EAD.

Thank you gc_2006. Is AP a one-time deal or can it be renewed till I get my gc. I am trying to avoid all the hassel of getting an appointment and going to the consulate during what may be a very short visit to India. I am planning to visit in the summer of next year. I could go to canada but cannot afford the time and money. I appreciate your response. Thanks again

AP is issued for certain period (cant seem to recall the max time for which its issued) but its way easier to renew than H1. You do not need appointment of any sort to renew AP.

AP seems the to be the way to go. Is there any down-side to it? I mean has anyone experienced any inconvenience by the authorities in India or in the US because of the AP. I say say this since the date on the visa will be a past date that has already expired and there is no apparent update to the passport. Looking at your replies this might be a redundant question but I just want to make sure. Thanks

Its adviseable to have H1 extensions as a backup plan b/c if the candidate loses job before atleast 6 months have passed after filing 485, he/she is out of status.
