L2+EAD to L1

Hi

My husband is on L1 visa and Im currently on his dependent(L2) visa. I have obtained my EAD during my stay here. Prior to coming to the US, I was working for a software company and had come here on leave of absence. So Im still employed with that employer. Now, after getting my EAD, my employer is interested in utilizing me in the US but wants a visa that was processed by them which would mean, I would need an L1 visa to work for the same employer. Is it possible to convert my L2 visa with EAD to L1 while Im in the US or would i need to travel to my home country to get this done?
Appreciate replies.

Thanks
Ramya

Your employer can file a reclassification petition with USCIS and you do not necessarily have to return to your home country to begin working in L-1.

But remember-With your current status (L-2 with an EAD) you will be more flexible than reclassifying to L-1. With an EAD you can do ANY kind of work for any employer. The EAD should work in your employer's favor too. Only the downside of maintaining L-2 is that your stay (thus your work too) depends on your husband's L-1 status.
