L1 to H1?

Hi, I'm looking for some advice....
I'm currently on an L1 visa with employer A who has recently laid me off. 6 months prior to being laid off, my I140 and I1485 were submitted to the USCIS and I've since received my receipt notices etc. Employer A has agreed not to proactively interfere with any of the green card processing.
My first question is: should the Green Card come through in due course or how likely would it be that the USCIS contact employer A at any time in the future therefore putting the Green Card in doubt?

Secondly, I've secured new employment with employer B which I intend to take up on receipt of my EAD card (applied for on the back of my I140 filing).
Is the EAD card only valid until such times as I've received my Green Card or the I140 has been denied?

It has been suggested to me that I should get employer B to apply for an H1 visa on my behalf incase the the Green Card is denied and that applying for an H1 visa would not hinder the Green Card process. Is this correct advice?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide or other options available to me.
