L1 to H1 Visa

HI,
I have been in L1 visa for the last 3 years. I found a company who is willing to sponsor H1. When I transfer from L1 to H1 how long I can stay in H1. Will I be able to stay in the H1 for 6 years or for only 3 years since I have already stayed in L1 for 3 years.
Appreciate any help on this.

You will only get 3 more years on H1. The 6 year limit includes H and L status.
 
H1 proessing while on L1

I am currently on an L1 visa in the US and was thinking for getting an H1 processing also started, through an independent company.

I have some basic questions:

1) If my H1 gets approved, say by jan 2005 and I am still in the US on an L1, what are my options? Would the L1 stand cancelled as soon as my H1 gets approved even if I didn't get it stamped from India?

2) Is it illegal to get an H1 processing started if I am already working in the US wth an L1?

3) Do I need to go back to India to get the H1 stamped on my passport if the same gets approved? Or can I start looking for another job on the basis of H1 approval alone?

4) How long can I wait to get my H1 stamped if I feel I am doing fine on an L1 alone and the L1 company also filed for my GC?

Please suggest,
