L1 to F1 conversion

Hi,

I am currently working in the US on an L1 visa. The petition is valid till Sep 2007, but the visa expired back in Dec 2005. I got admission to college for this August.

Is it possible for me to change to a student visa (F1) from here? Or do I have to head back to India for that?

It is the same case for me. Can you tell me what you figured out?
 
my l94 expires in 2009, but classes would start sometime in september. Although I'd prefer to go back before I rejoin as a student, I'd feel a lot more comfortable having an F1 in my hand before resigning.
