L1 pulled but I-94 valid , valid stay?

My L1 will be pulled (=they cancel my employment) by my US HOST company Aug 16th 08. But my I-94 shows the date Sept 28,2008. This would mean that I can legally stay in the USA till this I-94 date. As I understand an I-94 is a permission to stay in the US. But I believe I cannot work in the US during that time because my L1 is not valid anymore ,not for a US company nor for a non US company. In other words tourist only.

Is this correct?

The best thing to do is to leave ASAP after Aug 16 and Sept 28 seems like a reasonable date to leave by since any one needs to wrap up things before returning home. Unfortunately INS does not have a firm guidance on the subject -- how soon should a person leave after the underlying visa is canceled.

In general, though, regardless of what the I-94 has, once the underlying job is gone, you are no longer authorized to stay in the country.

If you never want to visit the US or apply for another visa, it is OK to stay long but if you want to do so, it is best to always be in status.
