Kid holding US Passport

Hello,

My kid was born in US, about 1.5 years back and has got US citizenship. we have his birth certificate (from US) and also his US passport. And, now he also has PIO, are we are back to India and will be here only.

I would like to know, what are the benefits for him (as well as parents) if kid has US passport? Is there any issue with passport validity / expiration? Does US government has any restrictions for US citizens staying outside US (or in India) for long time? Appreciate, if you can provide me some pointers where I can get more details.

Visit FRO once

If your son is already having PIO card, then it should be valid for 15 years.
and if your son's duration of stay in India is more than 180 days, then visit
FRO or local SP office, get him register, and you can continue living in India.
 
You have mentioned that your son plans to be in India for a long time. You have an option of paying additional $25 to convert PIO to OCI (dual citizenship) which will allow him lifelong visa and not just 15 years.

When he becomes 18, he has to make a selection whether he wishes to return to US or not.
Based on his decision, future course can be decided.

What has becoming 18 got to do with anything? The holder of OCI will remain a U.S. citizen and that is a lifetime status. He can return to the U.S. at any time before or after turning 18. The OCI is also advertised as a lifetime status, although of course it's not constitutionally protected in the same way as true citizenship (nobody has yet lived long enough to test this :))

Children under 16 do NOT have to register with FRO or local SP office.

i was also in the same situation and e-mailed to the following address "Chennai, CS" <ChennaiCS@state.gov> and got the following reply:

Registration with Indian immigration is compulsory for all foreigners staying in India, including American Citizens . Registering with the consulate is voluntary but helpful in case there is an emergency situation . This registration also helps us to maintain the count of US citizens living in South India. You can register online at http://travel.state.gov.

OCI need not register with FRO

OCI does not have to register at FRO, they are inspected at the POE in India anyway.

With regards to 18 years, I think the point was that the child when 18 can decide to opt for US Citz or Indian Citz.
