hi everybody. i have just been granted asylum on january 14 2004 after 20 months of rude battles.now i would like to know how i can apply for the benefits i am entitled to as an asylee.(like starting a business or getting a training for a better career etc..)
And also i have left a big family back home (6kids)including a 19 years son going to college this year) i would like to know how i can apply for derivative asylum to bring them here and if it is necessary to hire a lawyer to process my application(i-131)
N.B. i hired a lawyer to assist me to get my asylum approved in an immigration court(removal process).

Congratulations!!!
U can bring your wife and kids not older that 21 .... U must hire a lawyer .
I have the same problem i asked my lawyer about derivative asylum process he told me that I can bring my wife ,children age must not be older than 21. I have no kids My mom and sister left . I am thinking how to bring them here!
I dont know about starting buisness I couldnt get even secured Credit card from Bank!!!! :D

You can obtain a normal social security card from the social security office. You can qualify for most public welfare programs. You will receive financial aid if you want to go to school.

As far as family reunification goes, you need to file an I-730 form with the INS office in Lincoln. You can apply for your spouse and your children. As long as your children were under 21 when you first applied for asylum, they are eligible even if they are over 21 now (assuming they remain unmarried).

Unless there are complicating factors, a lawyer is probably not necessary.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Actually over 21 children are eligible if they were under 21 at the time the parent's asylum application was submitted. I am assuming the kids remain unmarried.

Asylees can apply for benefits for a period of upto 8 months from their date of approval. Benefits range from a monthly stipend, food stamps, and health insurance. Please read the below exerpt and visit the ORR's website for detailed information.

An asylee may be eligible to receive assistance and services through the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). ORR funds and administers various programs, which are run by state and private, non-profit agencies throughout the United States. The programs include cash and medical assistance, employment preparation and job placement, and English language training. Many of these programs have time-limited eligibility periods that begin from the date the asylee is granted asylum. An asylee can find out what programs are available and where to go for assistance and services in his or her state by calling 1-800-354-0365. The ORR website is http://www.acf.dhhs.gov/programs/orr.

Goodluck.
