Hi,
I am a GC holder, obtained through CP earlier this year. My wife was also approved at the interview but she hasn\'t come to US yet to get her GC. We have been married since the beginning of 2001. I\'m trying to find out if it\'s legal and how to file joint tax returns for 2001, given that we were married for the duration of 2001. It looks like IRS requires a SSN or an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) for
tax filers. I have a SSN, but my wife has neither. As long as she is overseas, I think she cannot apply for a SSN. She won\'t be able to come here for a while.
Does anybody know if she can apply for an ITIN instead ? Can we legally file jointly with that ITIN ? I hope such tax matters don\'t haunt you if and when you apply for citizenship.
Thanks,
Chriss
