Joint sponsor/ household size

Hi,

My wife and I are living together. She is sponsoring me, but her income doesn't meet the requirement of the household size for two people ($18212). So, I will have a joint sponsor who is NOT living with us and she is my sister-in-law. Both of them have been working for almost three years (this year will be the third one).

Does having a joint sponsor change the requirement for the household size from two to three?

Also, can I add my income even thought I've been working for just 2 years?Where will I fill out my part on the I-864 form?

Then, do I have to wait for the next tax return from both my wife and my sister-in-law?

Will they fill out the form I-864 together (as sponsor and joint sponsor) or separate (two I-864 forms) ?

Thank you very much,

2 separate I-864's are required -- one filled out by your USC wife, one by the joint sponsor.

Re-read the I-864 instructions. For the joint sponsor, the household size would include you plus him/herself, his/her dependent children (including over-18 children claimed as a dependent for Federal taxes), other dependents of the joint sponsor claimed on tax returns, plus any other immigrant for whom they ever filed an I-864 or I-864A (which hasn't had a terminating event such as the immigrant becoming a US citizen or leaving the US permanently). Apparently your USC spouse would not be included.

If you're involving a joint sponsor who doesn't count as a "household member" according to the I-864A, the joint sponsor alone must have enough income without combining it with yours or your spouse's income.
